The Americas

Yngvild and Jarle Hofstad have been working in Honduras since 1998. They were originally involved in relief work after the impact of Hurricane Mitch in Autumn of that year, based in La Ceiba. Following the completion of that project they felt led to continue working in Honduras and moved to La Mosquitia – the poorest and most remote part of the country.

Jarle is a bush-pilot and spends most of his time flying sick people to hospital for treatment as well as transporting doctors, missionaries, pastors, relief workers and others around the area.

With mountains, rainforest and swamps around, his small plane is the only way to get anywhere without travelling for many days by river – there are almost no roads in the area and a 15 minute flight is equal to a day’s travelling by canoe! When he isn’t flying around, he is often maintaining the aircraft to make sure it is safe and ready for service.

Yngvild’s job is, first of all, to be a mum to their three kids – Tobias, Benjamin and Camilla but as well as this she manages to spend time teaching and discipling the local young people. She is also involved with the women and teaches them from the Bible as well as helping with organising and teaching at youth conferences in the different villages in the area.

Kristina has been working in Columbia since 1999. She has worked in the YWAM base in Cartegena as DTS staff and later went on to start a mission school at the base. This now runs once a year and focuses on training Latin American believers to go in to mission. Another of Kristina’s goals is to be a help to the local churches in equipping them to become involved in missions in various ways.

The city of Cartegena is situated on the Caribbean coast of Columbia and has about 1 million inhabitants, mostly descendants from Spanish colonists and African slaves. In recent years there has been a rapid growth in Evangelical churches and consequently there is a big need for discipling new believers and leading them to a mature faith as well as an awareness of the calling to go in to all the world and share the gospel.

Columbia has suffered 40 years of guerrilla activity and thousands of lives have been lost. There are problems with kidnapping, violence and murder and the government is trying to work towards putting the problems of the past to an end. Despite the many difficulties they face, Columbian people are hospitable, lively and proud of their country and culture.

Magrete and Thor Stensby went to Kona, Hawaii in 2003. YWAM’s international university; UofN (University of the Nations) has it’s bigest campus here. This is their home and workground. Every three months a new course will start in the campus all year around. All together about 800 people live at the campus. Because people from 40 different nations are represented, there is a exciting and varied character at the base.

Magrete and Thor are princpals on the Foundation School, which is a school for kids and youths in the age of 3-18 years. Their students are mainly the kids of those attending the courses at the UofN at Kona.

Magrete and Thor are running the school out from King’s Kids ideas. They have elements from the DTS in the school, which carachterize the teaching combined with ordinary teaching and subjects.
