Practical information
Welcome to DTS at YWAM Skjærgårdsheimen!
We have been running DTS’s at this base for many years, but 2008 was the first year we opened the school for non Norwegian speakers to attend. Now we have a bilingual DTS! That has been a blessing the last years! Approx 2/5 of the students are international. The rest are Norwegians.
Skjærgårdsheimen:
The Skjærgårdsheimen base is on the idyllic island of Flekkerøy, 13 km south-west from Kristiansand. The base has a beautiful view, grocery store and a bus stop 10 minutes walk from the base. The island of Flekkerøy has amazing nature. You can look at pictures from Flekkerøy/Skjærgårdsheimen here.
Next school:
Next school starts Monday 17. of September 2012 and lasts until Tuesday 19. of March 2013.
There will be no program during the Christmas holiday from middle of December 2012 until 2nd January 2013. Most of the students travel home in the Christmas break.
Application
To apply for DTS we have an online application form. The online form is here:
If you will need to apply for a visa to Norway, we should receive your application and have time to contact your reference person before May 1st to have enough time to process it and for you to apply for your visa. You can start to apply after January 1st. Check this link to know if you will need to apply for a visa. Please contact us if you have questions about this.
We have some guidelines which we use when we consider a DTS application from a “non-Western” country:
- We prefer to know the reference person ourselves – for them to be someone we already have contact with.
- We prefer to have an existing co-operation with the country the applicant comes from and this base.
- We prefer that the country the applicant comes from is one of our “focus” countries.
Even if the applicant does not meet these criteria, we still pray about the application and ask God to show us what His will is. So, everyone is welcome to apply no matter whar country you are from!
Finance:
Price lecture phase: NOK 23.900,- (approx.USD 4000/EURO 3100)
Price outreach: NOK 18.000,- (approx USD 3000/EURO 2340)
The exchange rates are changing all the time, so you will need to double check this prices!
The school fee covers food and housing, teaching, air-tickets for outreach and travelling inside the outreach country. Personal emergency travel insurance, vaccinations and visa for outreach is not included in the school fee. So you need to add on about 3000 NOK for these costs too.
If you need a Norwegian visa to come here, you need to pay half of the school fee before we start the visa application process. If you are allowed to enter Norway without visa for three months, you only need to pay the registration fee before we can start your visa application.
The school day:
Monday to friday the school day is from 8am til 4pm. The day starts with time alone with God before we have worship and prayer together. The teaching lasts from 10am to about 2pm. There is some variation from day to day. After teaching we have small-groups, practical work, “one on one” mentoring time and “focus tracks”.
In the evenings the program is different from day to day and from week to week. Mondays there is study time from 5.30pm – 7pm. There is a community meeting once a month, team preparation meetings three times during the fall, work duties, ministry in churches and evangelism. In the evenings there is also time for social fellowship with fellow students and staff.
Rooming:
All our students lives in the dorm in the 2nd and 3rd floors. It is double rooms with a wash basin in each room. Many of the rooms are newly decorated and have a beautiful view over the sea. There are toilets and showers in each hallway. You can see pictures of the dorms here.
Weather:
September – December are considered the Autumn months in Norway, that means the climate will become colder and colder. The outside temperature will be about 10 – 15 degrees Celsius (about 50 – 60 degrees Fahrenheit) the first month, and in October to December the temperature will be about 0-10 degrees Celsius (Fahrenheit). There can also be a lot of rain during this season! Bring warm clothes, a good jacket and warm shoes. It is good to pack for layering. Even when it is cold outside, we will stay nice and warm inside. Norwegian homes are made for cold weather.
